THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING – A REVIEW OF THE KING IS BACK!

Elvis The King

The SSE Arena Belfast kindly provided me with tickets to review their theatre show The King is Back and I’m delighted to share my views with you.

16th August 1977 was the day Elvis Presley “The King” died but he left a lasting impact on the world that went well beyond that of music.

Growing up in Belfast the music of Elvis had a profound effect on me.  My mum was an avid fan, she played the music of Elvis regularly and to me that music was inspirational, it filled me with an intensity with spiritual lyrics.

It is no wonder the spirit of Elvis lives on with great cultural awareness and while some may think Elvis has left the building, I say don’t worry because Ben Portsmouth has entered!

Ben is a fantastic singer and musician – I fear to say he’s an Elvis tribute artist because that doesn’t do him justice. Close your eyes when listening to Ben and you hear, feel and sense a world where Elvis remains.

It’s no surprise that John Lennon said “Before Elvis, there was nothing,”  Hearing Ben sing in the same unrestrained and raucous style of Elvis, brought Elvis to the SSE Arena Belfast.

Not only does Ben sing like The King, his long hair and sideboards and his guitar playing altered the stage in which there was again a world where The King was very much alive.

Ben Portsmouth as Elvis opened the door for me to enjoy a wonderful evening at the SSE Arena Belfast filled with musical talent that is the Elvis phenomenon.

While there are too many fantastic songs to list here highlights included blockbusters like In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds, I was delighted and inspired by every single song that Ben performed.  Of course we were all there to hear Elvis and Ben didn’t disappoint.

The venue was perfect too, the SSE Arena Belfast has brought a unique experience just for those of us who prefer a more intimate feel of a theatre performance.  I have to admit to disliking large arenas for comedy and music, much preferring shows that give us audience members a more up close and personal feel – and this setting also allowed for the us audience to sing along and leap out of our seats and jive to the music!

Having Ben perform as Elvis was a thrilling experience in this setting.  You don’t have to take my word for it though, why not try it for yourself – you can see what’s on at the SSE Arena here.  I can’t recommend this setting highly enough.

A truly enjoyable performance by the man who would be King in a stunningly fantastic venue.

Elf x
