What on earth is StumbleUpon I hear you cry!  To be honest until four weeks ago it I had never heard of the word let alone knew how to work it and understand how important it would become in helping me increase my traffic.

My traffic has increased so much from StumbleUpon that my reaction now is “Oh my goodness why on earth aren’t there more bloggers using this wonderful tool to increase traffic?”  Your blog will most certainly gain new followers if you start using StumbleUpon.

What is StumbleUpon and how does it work?

Well if you use Pinterest and you pin images, for StumbleUpon (SU) you stumble content.  It’s very easy to set up.  You sign up for account as you would any social account.  You then pick different categories of interest specifically to you, your niche or your interests, like parenting,  SU then finds pages from the web all about parenting just for you.  Once you’ve read that page you can rate it with a thumbs up or thumbs down and hit the stumble button again and the next page will pop up.

How does it benefit bloggers?

Well, it’s really very simple you want people to be stumbling your content that way they will see your posts.  The more thumbs up you get the more likely your content will be stumbled by others.  You can also upload your own content to StumbleUpon yourself to start things off.  I would highly recommend you place a StumbleUpon button on each post as you would for other social media platforms to then allow others to stumble your content as they would pin to Pinterest.

StumbleUpon is very unique, the reader gets to see your content immediately when it pops up on StumbleUpon so you will see an increase in your views immediately.  Users will also be able to view other posts and if you have the StumbleUpon social share button they can then stumble even more of your content.

I have to mention a slightly downside to using it and that’s while your page views will go up fast, the time those readers are spending on your site will more than likely go down, specially if they aren’t that interested in that particular post.  However I strongly believe the benefit of getting new readers should be the priority at this point.

I love StumbleUpon. It’s great for getting more traffic. I agree that it makes your bounce rate a little higher, but it gets your stuff in front of more people, which is definitely a good thing 🙂

I think, for you to benefit more from StumbleUpon, you need to stumble more of other people’s content for you to get traffic from there. The more you stumble other people’s content plus yours, the more traffic that get referred to your site.

Totally agree, think it’s more like Pinterest that way 50/50 is normally how I approach it.

So glad to see that Stumbleupon is getting more, much-needed attention. I used to use it ALL the time back in the early 2010’s. Once Pinterest hit the scene it seemed to have faded into the background. I’m happy to see it making a comeback, especially in the blog world!
