I have been blogging for nearly two years.  However for the first 18 months I had no clue what I was doing – seriously!  It has only been the last 4-5 months that I have managed to get a handle on blogging.  That’s the reason for writing this post.  The easy guide to increasing your domain authority (also referred to as DA)

I have gone from a domain authority of 12 to 28 in the past 5 months or so and below are the strategies I have used to get there.  However, before starting I want to go back to basics.

What the heck is Domain Authority and Why Should I Be Interested?

Domain Authority or DA is a value from 0-100 given to your blog by Moz which determines the overall quality of your blog.  So the higher your DA the more likely it is to rank highly on Google and searches.  The score is given for your content, links back to your site (backlinks), how old your blog is, to name but a few metrics.

So basically if you want your blog to be seen and appear higher up on Google searches then you want a higher domain authority.  Also, another reason  you want a higher Domain Authority is for sponsored content.  The higher your DA the more you can earn from sponspored posts. So let’s get started with my easy guide to increasing your domain authority.

Quality Content

Google ranks websites for their overall quality.  It is why quality content is esessential to increasing your DA.  It also ensures that your audience are engaged and you make content that is relative and unique to them.  A great blog post should also be from 400 to 800 words.  Other things to keep in mind include using graphics to enhance posts, don’t copy someone else’s work be original, engage your audience and stay on topic.

Backlinks

Quality backlinks to your blog and pages will also help to increase your DA.  However, you need to consider a few things before seeking out these links.  What I mean by backlinks is very simple.  If I were to write a post and include a link to your blog, that would be a backlink because I am linking to you.  So essentially you are trying to get people to link back to you.

There are several things you can do to get backlinks. The first one is guest posting on another site.   You could post on Facebook groups to see if anyone would be interested in hosting a guest post from you.  Another way is to be featured.  Some bloggers do special features and by answering a few questions on certain topics they will link back to your blog.  This is similiar to bloggers crowdsourcing for a blog post, again for answering a question or two they will link to your blog. Interlinking

What I mean by interlinking is to include links to your other blog posts within each new post.  For example see above where I have put together a list of “Related Posts”.  This is great for internal search engine optimisation but it also boots your rankings on Google as it allows for Google crawlers to access more of your pages .  Not only is it good for your DA, your rankings but it is also good practice to show your readers what else you have written about.  However, make sure each interlinking is a dofollow link.

Link Party

Another great idea is for all bloggers to link to each other and spread the Google link juice around!  There are Facebook groups where this happens not and again.  However, I often do this every month or so as I believe very much in linking and supporting other bloggers.  Don’t be afraid to link to other bloggers.  You won’t be penalised and to be honest I believe we need to support each other and enhance the blogger community by linking up when we can.

I hope the above tips help you increase your Domain Authority.  These are what I have been doing over the past 5 months or so and have noticed an increase in my DA. So if you want to increase your domain authority then get started on these and let me know how you get on.

Ever since I found out about DA I’ve been obsessed with it, and trying to find ways to increase it. My blog is still extremely new, so I know it will take a while to build that. Thanks for the tips!

You are welcome. I’ve been blogging for a bit but only recently decided to look in to this! Had been clueless at the start so good on you for trying to do it right from the start!

Had my blog for years now, but only just taking it seriously now. Only just discovered DA and the importance it has. My blog is through blogger rather than WordPress… does that affect my ranking? I’ve got a DA of 15 at the moment so still got a way to go before I hit enough to get the good sponsored content!

No it doesn’t affect it. Katie. If you’d like to let me know your blog I can pop a link in to one of my blog posts if it’s relevant. That will get you started on your journey to increase your DA. Good luck with it.
