Eco-anxiety is our new way of life. As a nation, we are increasingly attuned to the damaging effects that our lifestyles can inflict upon the planet. Simple everyday decisions such as how to get to work and what to eat for dinner can have far-reaching impacts on the natural environment.

Since the coronavirus lockdown started, the tragic events have been accompanied by major environmental benefits. Restricted movement and halted economies have led to reduced emissions, cleaner waters and clearer skies.

The current global situation has been seen by many as a wake-up call to start taking more care of our planet. Not everyone has to be a Greta Thunberg or a David Attenborough, but we can all play a part by making simple changes to our daily lives. If you want to start living a more eco-friendly lifestyle, here are five ways you can start making a difference right away.

  • Eat less meat

The livestock industry is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gases. Although it may be too much to ask people to cut out meat entirely, you can decrease your impact by reducing the amount of meat you eat. Add more plant-based protein or seafood to your diet as a replacement.

  • Travel better

One of the most significant changes an individual can make in cutting their carbon footprint is to stop flying. Globally, we make 40 million flights year, which contributes astronomically to the effects of global warming. Make a difference by travelling by train or coach instead. Cut down on your car trips too. Could you take public transport to work, or better still, cycle?

  • Use less paper

The world is increasingly reliant on digital technology, but so much paper is still being used. The more we consume, the more trees must be cut down. If you can avoid paper in your personal and professional life, you should do so. And recycling the paper that you do use will make a huge impact.

  • Use less plastic

Plastic, as most people know, can be extremely harmful to the environment. It can take hundreds of years to biodegrade, and it is predicted that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Most companies are now beginning to respond to the growing avoidance of single-use plastic. We are now offered a wealth of plastic-free options like canvas shopping bags or cardboard straws. Find ways to reduce the amount of plastic you use across your daily life.

  • Make sustainable choices

As consumers, we make choices every day, from which brand of cereal to buy to what shows to watch on TV. We make such decisions casually, but we should be more mindful of the environmental impacts behind them. Different companies and brands have different approaches to environmentalism. Some companies, such as Duplo International and Patagonia, take great care to be sustainable and ethical in everything they do. Others, on the other hand, make less effort to preserve the natural world. By only choosing eco-friendly brands, you actively show your support for the environment.
