Bathroom Ideas on a Budget

I am so ready to redecorate and redesign our bathroom.  Being totally honest the last time we painted it was 12 years ago!  Don’t get me wrong it’s not awful as we spent a lot of money on it, but it is so dated now that I really do need to redecorate.

However, we certainly don’t have a lot of money.  But the good news is that I have done all the hard work for you and pulled together some totally amazing Bathroom Suites for a variety of bathroom sizes and at fantastic prices.

As I am at the beginning phase of redecorating I wanted to share with you the fact that updating a bathroom in your home will add value if you plan to move in the future.  Another tip is to determine how much you want to spend on your new bathroom and factor in the cost of a plumber and electrician too.

So, what are you waiting for?  Below are some bathroom suite ideas together with other money saving tips on redecorating your bathroom.

  1. Small Spaces

Bathroom suites can get expensive and if you are stuck for space where do you go?  This fantastic suite is ideal for small spaces.  For less than £230 you get the complete set.

  1. Tiling

Tile can be expensive and if you want to tile the walls and floor you will probably have to fork out for a tiler to do the job for you.  In my experience I now wish we didn’t tile the floor as we had a radiator leak!  So, to save you money how about limiting the number of tiles you use.  Instead focus on having a feature wall or somewhere you want to make a high impact.

3. Paint

If you are happy with your tiles as they are, one of the cheapest things you can do to freshen your bathroom is to use paint.  Word of caution though if you are doing the paining yourself – take your time.  It took us forever to paint ours as we had so much to paint round.  From the shower, freestanding bath, sink, toilet – it was endless.  I recommend you buy some painter’s masking tape and have some patience too!

  1. Showers, Fixtures & Fittings

There are so many options when it comes to replacing a shower.  You can opt for replacing the whole lot or just your screen or fixtures and fittings.  Head over to the Big Bathroom Shop to see the full range of different options available to you.  Remember to stick to your budget and options which work best for you.

You also have the option to update light fixtures, sink taps and towel racks which wouldn’t cost much.  Updating them could make a huge difference to your bathroom with little outlay.  I mean just look at this fantastic mirror light, it would make any bathroom stand out.

5. Grout

Another way to freshen up your bathroom is to redo your grout on your tiles.  It’s so cheap to buy white grout these days it will give you clean lines, crisp whiteness, and sparkle.  Getting rid of that unsightly grim is a must to cheer up a dull bathroom without spending a lot.

As I have already mentioned renovating the bathroom is firmly on my to-do list.  I really want to add a vanity unit too.  Below I’ve put a mood board together to show you what items I’m considering buying.  They are all within my budget range.

What about you?  Are you considering redecorating your bathroom?  Do you have any other money saving tips to share?

I love freestanding baths but this one is extra special as the back is flush with the wall.  Otherwise there would be a gap and you’d have a nightmare painting behind it!  I’m a very practical person!

Yes I love the mirror but I also love the sink and vanity unit.  Our current sink has no vanity unit and the space beneath is wasted.  I really need this now!

We have a miserable little shower head but wow look at this shower tower!  Being able to stand under this with all the different options would be fantastic.

Oh to have wall mounted taps – how luxurious.  Only problem is that I’d need to probably knock down some of the bathroom wall.  Don’t know if I’m ready for that mess!

In our home the room that is often left to the last minute even when it desperately needs a lick of paint is the bathroom.  I always find it difficult to know what to do with the bathroom without it costing the earth!  While it’s always nice to redecorate and make our house feel like a home, big projects can often run the risk of breaking the bank. Not only can redecorating cost a lot of money, it takes a lot of time and creativity.  There are times when I have none of these!

So how much can you really do to make a bathroom look better without making some big investments or changes? With the help of Victorian Plumbing, I have put together some cash-friendly ideas that will help you make your bathroom reflect your own personal style.

The right mirror can complement both the style and layout of your bathroom. If you’re a “less is more” kind of person, then maybe a standard bathroom mirror is the right choice for you. This screams simple but efficient, whilst tying perfectly with the minimalist trend. If you’re anything like me, then you will know lighting is key! If you are planning on spending your time getting ready in the bathroom, then an illuminated mirror is the one for you. Why not mix eras and pair a vintage style mirror with a modern bathroom? There are plenty of themes and styles to choose from.

Another bright idea is to change the lighting fixtures in your bathroom. Although the weather seems to be showing signs of the sun, we all know the British summer doesn’t stick around for long. So, it’s best to get your lighting perfect now. Gone are the days of the drawstring light switch, so why not add a bit of elegance to your bathroom with a chandelier? Due to its luxurious exterior, you will be surprised at how little this elegant addition can cost. Let your personality shine with a pop colour in your bathroom. Most multi-coloured lighting allows you to set a colour, strobe effects or fade with as little as a click of a button!

Bathroom suite and shower

If buying a new bath suite or shower is out of the question, then there are plenty of ways you can pretty your bathroom suite and shower up! Add some greenery to your bathroom by draping some fresh eucalyptus over the showerhead for an aroma-therapeutic shower experience.  Transform your bath suite into a relaxation hub and add a luxury bath shelf – ideal for wine drinking and getting lost in your favourite book.

Shower curtains are also an easy way to transform your bathroom, they come in a variety of patterns and themes that can complement your choice of décor perfectly and there are lots of funky designs to reflect your personality.

Now it’s time to talk about the real MVP of the bathroom game, towels. They come in all shapes and sizes and are undeniably a crucial part of your bathing experience. Whether they are being used to dry your body or crafted into a makeshift wrap for your hair, you rely on your towels daily, so treat them that way. Instead of leaving them laying on the floor, why not drape them elegantly over your bathtub or radiator? For extra storage, experiment with a basket or stool to display your extra towels in an imaginative way.

Let your creativity flow and have fun with your own personal style by introducing accessories to your bathroom! Anything from plants, candles, vases or even wall art can be used to reflect your own style.  If you love all things matching, then storage bathroom sets may be the best option for you as they allow you to create a totally practical yet stylish setting. If you’re looking for something a bit different, why not add an unusual focal point to your bathroom such as the latest glass wash basins or combining a basin unit with a vintage bicycle frame? Although not your typical bathroom décor, it will definitely get your guests talking! There are many upcycling ideas around to give you ideas and inspiration.

These are just some tips to help you with decorating your bathroom without breaking the bank.  Are there any others you can think of?  Let me know below in the comments.

If you were to walk into your living room, kitchen, dining room and bedroom, you would probably get a warm, fuzzy feeling in your belly, which is because you have done all you can to make these rooms feel warm and cosy. You have embellished them and graced them with all sorts of decorative flourishes. You have done all you can to give them character. So why haven’t you done this to your bathroom? Don’t worry, we were expecting your mouth to fall open slightly as you scratch your head!

It is odd though, right? After all, the bathroom is a place where we can end up relaxing for an hour without any distraction, which means it is more deserving of some character than every other room in your home. With that in mind, we have come up with some simple ideas to help you add a little style and character to your bathing space. Trust us, once you have made these amendments, your home will feel more whole than ever.

Do Away With The Conventional Bath Mat

There is no rule saying you need to step out of the tub or the shower and onto a conventional bath mat. It is just something we do without giving it any thought. If you really want to make an impact in your bathroom, however, we suggest you swap your mat for a vintage rug, something that will fill the giant space in the middle of your floor with a little more excitement and character – something Persian perhaps.

Sit Back And Relax

You’ll be gobsmacked by how dramatically a chair can change a bathroom, and that is without even touching on the practicalities of this addition. It could be an old wooden chair that stands out in all white bathroom. It could be an ottoman that adds a layer of luxe. It could be an old armchair in the corner that bursts with personality. Whatever fits your space and your wants.

Things Don’t Need To Be Boring

There are certain things that every bathroom needs to have – bath, towel rails, faucets etc – but these things don’t need to be boring. They don’t just have to exist. In fact, we urge you to make these things into features. Get yourself a Salzburg Traditional Victorian towel rail from Upgrade your bathtub by getting a freestanding version, or painting your current one in bright colours. Instead of just having whatever faucet, invest in some brass ones, something that will give your taps a bit of character.

Wallflowers Not Needed

If there is one thing every bathroom needs it is a splash of nature, at least according to It could be that you add a bunch of fresh – or fake – flowers to the windowsill or stuff a few branches of eucalyptus into a big black and vase and push it into the corner of your room – it doesn’t matter so long as you do. These will bring a life to your room and add another level of serenity. Some will say this only works if you stay on top of them, but we think the rustic look works best of all.

3 Simple Tricks to add a touch of luxury to your bedroom

Need to add a touch of character to your bathroom. This post highlights some easy ways to change the decor of your bathroom.

When we buy our first homes, many of us stick to the floor plan that we are already provided with. Moving house can be such a hassle that the idea of knocking walls through, and changing things around seem a bit too much- at least for that first year in your new property.

But after a while, you may start to have a very different vision for the home you’ve bought. Perhaps you have come across an issue such as a lack of space or functionality in one of your rooms, or perhaps your personal situation has changed (the pitter patter of tiny feet, maybe!).

A common room that many of us like to remodel in this case is the bathroom, especially because it is one of the top-value rooms in our homes. Chances were when you moved into your home you already had a master or family bathroom at your disposal, but you may want to move this to a different area of the house or to add a second bathroom at your convenience.

There are a few ways you can do this without adding an extension, which requires planning permission and usually a lot of expense. Here are a few bathroom conversion ideas that can add value to your home and give you the bathroom of your dreams all in one go.

The en-suite

En-suites are still a relatively new concept, but something that many modern homeowners still can’t do without. If you have a bedroom in your home that is reasonably large, and you don’t need all that space, why not convert a corner of it into an en-suite? Sure, you will need builders in to put a wall and a door in place, and it might still be quite compact. But if you have children, or you have guests who stay over regularly, en-suites can be incredibly practical.

The open-plan bedroom/bathroom

An even more contemporary concept these days is the notion of an open-plan bedroom-cum-bathroom. This certainly isn’t for the shy among us so that it won’t be for the faint hearted! But if you live alone, or if you don’t mind sharing your bathroom so openly with another person, it can be a great-looking option. Go ultra modern with a freestanding tub from a company such as, to truly make the most of the space. There isn’t anything better than being able to go straight from bath to bed, after all!

The roof conversion

Many people convert attic space for a variety of different reasons – from creating a new bedroom to a private games room. But who’s to say that you can’t have a bathroom in your attic either? This concept can feel especially luxurious, especially if you have skylights that bring in a lot of natural light (and thankfully you don’t always need to worry about pulling the blinds down in this scenario!). Do some research about where you can find sloping shower doors to fit the design of your roof and your private attic bathroom could soon be a reality.
