The following 4 tips are by expert Alex Lawler, Personal Trainer at Pro-Fit Personal Training

Have a post-Christmas Goal

Having something to aim for in the New Year is a really good way to keep motivated. It could be an event such as a 5k run for which you need to maintain your level of training in order to be able to take part in, or maybe a holiday that is coming up and you want to have that bikini body in time!

Having some kind of schedule or plan in place in advance for any prior arrangements and tasks that you have to fulfil means you can allow yourself to feel more in control of your time; helping you to feel less overwhelmed during a busy period. It also allows you to be able to set yourself realistic targets in terms of when and how you will be able to train.

Staying motivated can be challenging at the best of times, but even more so over the cold winter months when it’s often more appealing to be sat on a nice warm sofa with a brew watching the latest box set. Having someone or something to hold you accountable is the perfect way to stay motivated.  Having a personal trainer, attending some kind of group fitness class or even having a buddy to train with, means that you know you have a commitment/responsibility to others. We always go out of our way to do much more for other people than we would for ourselves.

Have a Why

The initial reason most people start to train or go to the gym is something externally motivating; wanting to look like that billboard model, or wanting to be able to fit back into that favourite little black dress. But if we dig down a little deeper, we can find a real internal reason that grips us emotionally; something intrinsically motivating.  Maybe there’s a history of bad health in the family and you want to ensure that you can stay as healthy and active as you can as you get older, maybe you have children or plan to in the future and you want to be healthy to be able to keep up with them as they are growing up. Whatever your reason, if you find your real ‘Why’, this is perfect motivation – not just in the New Year, but throughout life!

Give yourself a helping hand

Cotswolds-based GP, Dr David Edwards says: “In addition to the demands of a busy lifestyle, our brown fat (good fat) steadily declines from when we are children. By the time we reach our middle-age, it is replaced by white fat,  the bad stuff, which clings to our waistlines and hips. At the same time as gaining fat tissue, we lose muscle as we get older, causing our energy needs to drop because fat tissue requires less energy (or calories) to maintain its functions compared to muscle. The weight slowly creeps on and can take even longer to remove.”  That’s where the likes of formoline L112 comes in as it can help you lose weight.
