Doing the occasional healthy thing is easy. It’s sticking to a healthy lifestyle that’s hard. We can all eat a piece of fruit now and then or run on the treadmill for 5 minutes once a month, but finding a way to fit healthy habits into your routine on a regular basis takes dedication and perseverance. You need to stick to a healthy lifestyle in order for habits to form. Setbacks are inevitable. For example, exercise might be exhausting when you’ve already had a long day or you might find yourself forever craving “just one more” piece of chocolate. But you can stick to a healthy lifestyle once you get over the initial hurdle. Here’s some advice on achieving that.

Create a balanced diet

First of all, you need to fix your diet. Cutting out the junk and eating healthily is easier than you think. Most people make the mistake of thinking that dieting simply means “eating less”. Of course, after restricting your diet to small portions of fruit and vegetables for a few weeks, you might lose weight but your body will be craving the nutrients and vitamins it isn’t getting. You’ll end up bouncing back to your old diet in a catastrophic fashion, and your health won’t have improved at all.

If you want to change your diet then you need to find an eating pattern that can become a consistent part of your routine. You need variety, balance, and moderation. Eating a lot of calories isn’t bad if those calories are giving your body the sustenance it needs. Do a little research to make sure you’re getting all the carbohydrates, protein, iron, calcium and other important vitamins your body needs. If you’re still struggling to make the new diet stick despite your research then you might want to make an organised schedule so as to avoid eating the wrong food at first.

Find a physical activity that works for you

Eating well might be easy for you. As we get older, it becomes harder to stomach a lot of the junk food we could easily wolf down as kids. However, exercise is a different story. The thought of going for a run or lifting weights at the gym is probably something that makes you shudder. You might have been part of some sort of sports club when you were younger but you’re just too busy or too exhausted to cope with the idea of such strenuous activity these days. Still, physical activity doesn’t have to be time-consuming or overly-strenuous in order to improve your health. You just need to find some way to keep your body active every day.

You need to persevere if you want to make a habit permanent. You just need to squeeze physical activity into your existing routine. Instead of driving, you could cycle to work on occasion in order to get some exercise and fresh air. And don’t be discouraged if you have setbacks at first. You might want to look into bicycle accident solicitors if an injury or a damaged bike has put you out of action. Don’t give yourself excuses not to continue with a certain activity. The point is that there is no “perfect” way to exercise. If you don’t want to go to the gym then find some way to exercise at home. Maybe lifting weights isn’t for you so you could try out pushups or situps. Sometimes, the basic ways of exercising are best. You could go running around your local park for 15 minutes every day and that’d make a hugely positive impact on your health.

Don’t strain your mind

Mental health is just as important as physical health. If you really want to be healthy on a permanent basis then you need to avoid straining your mind too much. Fretting too much over healthy living, ironically, will make you unhealthier. Take your journey in steps so as to be sure that you don’t take on too much at once. You should aim to improve one aspect of your health per week because it can be hard to make habits form. You want to take the time to adapt to your new lifestyle without changing too much of your daily routine. You could start off by jogging for 5 minutes one week and then jog for 10 minutes the following week. Your ability to form a healthy lifestyle depends on your mind, essentially. But the healthier you become, the stronger your mind will become. It’s a positive cycle.
