SIMPLE STEPS TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH FOR LIFE

I entitled this blog post Simple Steps to Improve Your Health for Life.  I was going to call this blog post Let’s Talk about my Weight but I decided it would turn in to more of a rant!

 

I have been indulging in unhealthy foods and a sedentry life for several years now.  It has got to the stage where I am totally fed up with myself.  There are clothes I would love to wear but I am so self-conscious of my weight that I hide myself in long cardigans or long shits thinking it will cover me up.  It doesn’t though!

 

Three weeks ago, after my mum was admitted to hospital yet again something clicked.  I don’t know about you but knowing that the best way to lose weight and improve your health for life is eating less and exercising more doesn’t help me in the slightest!  I know all about it but doing it was another matter.

 

This has happened to me before where I gained so much weight and didn’t look after myself that I was feeling so down.  However, until you reach rock bottom or something does click for you then no amount of preaching will help.  That is how it has been for me.  To be honest I don’t know for sure if it was mum going in to hospital again and me wanting to improve my health to ensure I didn’t end up there or if it was seeing the lovely instagram pictures of otheres wearing beautiful clothes or the sun shining.  These are the only things I can think of that might have given me my moment to change my lifestyle.

 

I am not a going to the gym type of girl.  I don’t have a huge budget for our grocery shopping and if I ran I think it would kill me!  I decided the best thing for me to do was to make small changes that would improve my health for life.  I am hoping to build on these but in my first week of these steps I reduced my weight by 5lbs and 3lbs in my second week.

 

Below are the simple steps to improve your health for life.  They are slowly but surely improving mine.  Let me know below what you think:

1. Drink More Water

There are several reasons why I have started to drink more water.  Firstly, it is nature’s cleasing drink for your body.  It helps circulation of nutrients in your body and cleanses your system.  The other reason I drink more water is that it reduces your appetite.  There are times when I would feel hungry but yet after eating I would still be hungry.  The reason was that I wasn’t hungry at all I was thirsty!  So my first tip for improve your health for life is to drink more water.

2. DON’T SKIP BREAKFAST

It is said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  If you skip breakfast then you think you are entitled to have that chocolate bar – I know because that’s what I did.  Breakfast is important, it also helps us control our urge to snack before we have lunch.  I have started to eat a yoghurt with fruit for my breakfast in the mornings.  That is after a glass of water.  Having fruit and yoghurt gives you a head start to increasing your vitamin intake too!

3. DO SOME EXERCISE

This really does sound like I’m telling you what other websites tell you but honestly this is different.  I hate exercise, I hate getting changed in to leggings and other exercise outfits to then stand in front of a TV and do an exercise routine.  You also wouldn’t get me in the gym if it were free either!  My simple step to improve your health for life is to incorporate exercise in to your routine.
I will give you an example.  When I decided I needed to do more exercise I tried to figure out how to incorporate it in to my own routine.  What I used to do was take the train and bus to work.  On the way home I would normally be sitting for 30 minutes waiting for the train.  So I decided that rather than taking the bus to the station I would walk it.  It meant that rather than sitting on my bum for 30 minutes I would be walking that time to the train station.
Figure out how to incorporate exercise in to what you already do during the day.  Everyone is different so work out what is best for you.  Walking to the train is stage one of my plan.  The next stage will be to do some weights a few times a week too but I haven’t got to that yet.   Remember small steps!

4. EAT A BALANCED DIET (updated June 2018)

This has been the toughest task for me.  I was used to eat high calorie meals at every meal and snacking in between!  My weakness was and continues to be bread in any form!  It’s important to eat a balanced diet which has all of the food groups including protein, carbs and vegetables.  I now have more vegetables on my plate than anything else.  It does take some getting used to but it really is worth the effort as about 90% of weight loss is about what goes in to your mouth and 10% is exercise.

5. HAVE A SMALL SNACK

I could not go from eating a lot of high calories snacks to eating none.  It is often unrealistic for most people and it was for me.  So for me, I allow myself 2 chocolate digestives each evening with a cup of coffee.  It allows me to look forward to that snack without feeling I am depriving myself.  So there is a reward come the end of the day of being fit and healthy.

6. KEEP MOTIVATED TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH FOR LIFE

As I write this I am on week 3 of simple steps to improve my health for life.  I have to say that I could not have done it without one piece of equipment that I purchased before starting.  My Fitbit Charge 2.

It has helped me so much.  For example, I set my steps to 10,000 per day, it motivates me to keep going.  If I’m sedantry for over an hour, it beeps to help me stay active.  When you download the app to your phone you can input what you eat and it will tell you calories in and calories out with your stepping.  You can track your weight.  It has so many great features.  I have to say that it has become my helping friend to keep me on the straight and narrow to improve my health for life.
